Newborn Screening Tests

Cord blood banking is collecting and storing the blood from within the umbilical cord (that is the part of the placenta that delivers nutrients to the child) after the baby is born.
In the NICU, you can discover all birth defects or problems that your baby may have. You can also see what causes the disease, how dangerous it is to your baby, and if it is fatal.
Meconium Aspiration can happen before, during, or after labor and delivery when newborn inhales a mixture of meconium and amniotic fluid. The inhaled meconium can partially or completely block off the baby's airways.
A few routine screening tests that they do when your baby is born is a blood test to see if they have any problems with their blood. Another is a vision test to make sure that your baby is not blind. The last one is a hearing test to make sure that your baby is not deaf.
PKU is metabolic disorder. The metabolism process in the body that converts fuel from food into energy needed to do everything from moving to thinking to growing. The test detects if the baby is missing an enzyme called phenylalanine. that enzyme is necessary for normal growth in children.
